Theatre W.Va. has rough season, weather cuts shows

GRANDVIEW, W.Va. (AP) -- It's been a rough season for Theatre West Virginia.

The Raleigh County theater canceled a dozen performances of its outdoor dramas because of weather. Nine shows were lost to power outages following a severe windstorm in late June. Rain forced the cancellation of another three shows.

General manager Gayle Bowling tells The Register-Herald that it was the most difficult summer she has seen in 23 years with Theatre West Virginia. But it could have been worse.

The theater's 52nd season almost didn't happen. Theatre West Virginia shut down late last year after struggling for several years due to funding cuts. The state provided an additional $210,000.

Bowling says the theater will have to step up fundraising efforts, seek more grants and reduce costs.

She expects the 2013 season to be better as West Virginia celebrates its sesquicentennial.
