WV Gets Funding for Homeless Shelters

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia is receiving nearly $2 million in federal funding to support homelessness prevention, emergency shelters and other related services.

The funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development was announced by Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin and Rep. Nick Rahall.

The delegation applauded the funding and stressed the importance of help those who need basic necessities like shelter and a place to sleep.

The grants are awarded for the rehabilitation or conversion of buildings into homeless shelters. There's also funding for some social services, homelessness prevention and operating expenses.

About $1.65 million is being awarded to the state, with the remainder of the money going to the cities of Charleston and Huntington.
