LEWISBURG, W. Va (WVVA)-- The Greenbrier Valley Cultural Roundtable teamed up with the City of Lewisburg to create the 2012 Fire Hydrant Painting Contest.
Groups around town submitted designs and earned a hydrant to paint.
Lynn Creamer, the Vice President of the GV Cultural Roundtable, said it's all about showcasing art. "There's a lot of creative people in this area [and] it's a way to get their work out there," she said.
The idea came right from the fire chief himself, Creamer told WVVA. "The fire chief came to us to paint the hydrants," she said. A coat of paint on the fire hydrants will keep them protected from the elements.
The Greenbrier Valley Artists have taken on a few of the hydrants in the contest, according to Creamer.
"It's an opportunity for Lewisburg to show how artistic it is," said Creamer. "The hope is to make the city fun, and to have more art. As much art as we can."
Starting in September, the public can vote on their favorite hydrants. There is a prize for the winner, but the Cultural Roundtable has not yet determined what kind of prize it will be.
Voting begins on September 7. To get a map of hydrant locations and ballots to vote, go to the Greenbrier County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Winners will be announced October 13 at the annual Taste of Our Towns festival at Carnegie Hall.
