RAINELLE -- On Monday August 27, 2012, Aaron Jamaal Stanback, of Rainelle, was sentenced by the Circuit Court of Greenbrier County to fifteen to forty-five years in prison after pleading guilty to the felony offenses of Sexual Abuse by a Parent, Guardian, Custodian or Person in Position of Trust to a Child and Sexual Abuse in the First Degree. Stanback was indicted by the June 2012 Greenbrier County Grand Jury following an investigation conducted by Cpl. R. D. Baker of the Greenbrier County Sheriff's Department.

As part of the plea agreement with the State, entered before Circuit Court Judge James J. Rowe, Stanback waived his right to a Pre-Sentence Investigation Report, and the Court proceeded directly to sentencing.  As to his conviction of Sexual by a Parent, Guardian, Custodian or Person in Position of Trust to a Child, Stanback received a sentence of ten to twenty years in prison.  As to his conviction of Sexual Abuse in the First Degree, Stanback received a sentence of five to twenty-five years in prison.  The sentences, imposed consecutively, were the maximum sentences permitted by law. Additionally, Stanback is required to register as a sex offender for life.

Greenbrier County Prosecuting Attorney Patrick I. Via advised that he was pleased with the result of the case against Stanback. "Mr. Stanback's crimes clearly justified the prison sentences that he received today," stated Via. "In fact, the plea agreement with Stanback required that he give up his right to request any lesser or alternative sentence and that he accept the sentences imposed.   The Prosecutor's office is committed to seeking severe punishment for perpetrators of sexual abuse upon children, and to the protection of the children of our community," Via added.

The investigation was completed with the participation of members of the Greenbrier County Multi-Disciplinary Investigative Team. "By virtue of the hard work of the agencies involved in this case, we were able to rapidly arrest and prosecute the perpetrator of sexual abuse upon a child, and also protect an innocent child from further abuse," Via commented.

"I wish to express gratitude and appreciation on behalf of the entire community to Cpl. Roger Baker of the Greenbrier County Sheriff's Department and the Child and Youth Advocacy Center in Lewisburg. Each played an instrumental role in the successful resolution of this case, and to bringing protection and healing to the child. These members, and all others on our Multi-Disciplinary Investigative Team, provide invaluable services to our county, and I am very thankful for each and every one of them."
