Hunters Enjoy an Extended Squirrel Season

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - West Virginia is once again giving hunters more time to shoot the state's most popular small-game animal.

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources says statewide squirrel season opens on Sept. 8. It is the second year that the season is opening earlier.

Officials say mild weather conditions in September and longer days offer great hunting opportunities.

The agency says that despite poor crop conditions that reduced the population of squirrels, the state's numbers remain strong and hunters should not get discouraged.

The daily bag limit will remain at six and the possession limit at 24. The season ends Jan. 31.
