Drivers urged to slow down, watch for school buses

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - It's back-to-school season, and West Virginia State Police want motorists to slow down.

They're issuing a reminder that the speed limit in school zones is 15 mph. They also suggest allowing extra travel time in the mornings and afternoons, when children will be getting on and off buses.

State troopers will be randomly patrolling school zones to ensure compliance.

In May, state troopers who rode on school buses across West Virginia said they were concerned by the number of drivers illegally passing buses. They're planning more unannounced ride-alongs in the future to crack down on the estimated 600 motorists a year who illegally pass stopped buses.

State education officials say the failure to stop for buses puts children at risk of injury or death about 120,000 times each school year.
