W.Va. ag official warns consumers of melon recall

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- State Agriculture Commissioner Gus Douglass is warning consumers that West Virginia is included in an expanded recall of cantaloupe or honeydew due to concerns about possible listeria contamination.

Douglass said Tuesday that Burch Equipment of North Carolina issued an earlier recall on cantaloupe that didn't include West Virginia. But the company is expanding the recall to include all of this season's cantaloupe and honeydew melons that may remain on the market.

The produce was sold to distributors between June 23 and July 27 in 18 states, including West Virginia. The melons may have been distributed further to retail stores, restaurants and food service facilities.

Douglass suggests consumers check with vendors for information on where the melons came from.
