ROANOKE, Va. - The Virginia Department of Health is set to review its approach to addressing efforts to keep the state's smallest children alive until their first birthdays.
That's because the rate at which infants are dying in Virginia has stagnated and public health officials also have discovered some persistent and concerning racial disparities.
According to reports, Virginia's infant mortality rate in 2010 was about seven out of 1,000 births, but 14 out of 1,000 for black infant births.
In the past two decades infant mortality rates in Virginia have leveled off to about 7.1 per 1,000 live births. In 1982 Virginia's overall infant mortality rate was 12.9 per 1,000 live births.
Virginia health officials say there's work to be done but there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution.
