W.Va. lawmakers seek storm aid for residents

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Representatives David McKinley and Shelley Moore Capito say the federal government should help West Virginia residents recover from a June 29 windstorm.

Capito sent a letter to the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Friday asking it to reconsider its denial of Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's request for individual assistance.

She also asked FEMA administrator W. Craig Fugate to meet with Tomblin and West Virginia's congressional delegation to explain why the state's request was denied.

McKinley said Friday that FEMA's decision is wrong. He says many families have struggled in the aftermath and they deserve all available assistance.

The storm and subsequent storms left three people dead and more than 680,000 customers without electricity across the state.
