New W.Va. Turnpike toll system catches non-payers

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Drivers can no longer skip tolls at unmanned booths on the West Virginia Turnpike without paying the consequences.

A new $6 million computerized collection system photographs the license plates of vehicles that pass through toll booths without paying. A notice is then sent to the violator, who faces a fine as well as the toll.

Media outlets say the West Virginia Parkways Authority board voted Thursday to issue a letter of resolution marking completion of the toll system's installation.

Authority executive director Greg Barr estimates that the turnpike will recover $50,000 to $70,000 in skipped tolls annually.
