TAZEWELL (WVVA) - Thomas Brewster has resigned his position as Northern District Supervisor in Tazewell County.

A press release from Board of Supervisors Chairman Michael Hymes says Brewster is stepping down to take the position of Superintendent of Schools in Pulaski County.

Virginia code will not allow both positions to be held simultaneously.

Following is the full press release from Hymes' office:

Today, D. Michael Hymes Chairman of the Tazewell County Board Of Supervisors received a letter of resignation from Northern District Supervisor Thomas Brewster. In his resignation letter Mr. Brewster stated

"It is with great gratitude and sadness that I inform you of my decision to resign from the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors effective 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 8, 2012. Recently, I was offered the position of Superintendent of Schools for Pulaski County Public Schools. Unfortunately, Section § 22.1-63 of the Code of Virginia prohibits me from serving as both Superintendent of Schools and a member of the Board of Supervisors. After having many discussions with family and friends and personal reflection, I have decided to take the position and resign my post."

"I have enjoyed serving the citizens of the Northern District and Tazewell County, and I thank them for their confidence and support. My service has afforded me the opportunity to meet many wonderful new friends from across the district."

"I would like to thank Chairman Hymes and my Board colleagues for their cooperation and hard work for the citizens of Tazewell County. I would also like to thank our County Administrator Jim Spencer and his staff for their dedicated work on behalf of Tazewell County."

Hymes, said: I and our board members wish Tom great success in his new position and we are sad to lose his wisdom, caring spirit and great work ethic on our board. Tom has been strong voice for his district and Tazewell County and unfortunately the State Code will not allow Tom to hold the Superintendent of School and Board of Supervisors positions concurrently so we must now move to fill his seat on the board.

The State code outlines the process to follow in this situation and our board will move forward with this process in the next few weeks. This process provides for the filling of the seat temporarily and includes the advertisement of the position, acceptance of resumes from Northern district residents and selection of a replacement by the current board members. Once the seat is filled temporarily then seat be subject to election as the code requires.
