Officer incident at Princeton station investigated

PRINCETON, W.Va. (AP) -- The West Virginia State Police is investigating a domestic incident at the Princeton police station involving a city officer.

Mercer County prosecutor Scott Ash says Sgt. Mary Beth Gergely has been placed on administrative leave.

Ash tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that authorities believe Gergely stopped her domestic partner's vehicle and brought the woman to the police station. An argument then ensued.

Ash says surveillance cameras recorded the June 17 incident.

The police department asked the State Police to investigate to determine if any criminal laws were broken.

Princeton Police Chief P.V. Powell declined to comment, saying it's a personnel matter that's under investigation.

Powell says Gergely has been a member of the police department for more than 16 years.
