State police wrapping up Smyth County phone probe

MARION, Va. (AP) -- The Virginia State Police is wrapping up an investigation of a Smyth County Sheriff's Office cell phone that a hunting store used as a business line.

Tazewell County Commonwealth's Attorney Dennis Lee tells The Bristol Herald Courier that he expects to receive the results of the investigation soon. Lee was appointed as special prosecutor after Smyth County prosecutor Roy Evans recused himself.

A Chilhowie-based hunting store listed the cell phone as an online business contact. A co-owner of the store is the son of former Deputy Chief Kenneth M. Lewis. Lewis retired last week.

The newspaper says the phone was disconnected and the online listing was removed in December after it requested background information on the number.
