Ex-W.Va. sheriff fined in ethics probe

Posted:

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WVVA) -- The West Virginia Ethics Commission has fined a former Wood County sheriff stemming from an investigation into the unauthorized use of county credit cards.

The commission announced Thursday that ex-sheriff Ken Merritt agreed to a public reprimand and will pay $3,500 in fines and court costs.

The Parkersburg News and Sentinel reports the allegations stemmed from the unauthorized use of gasoline credit cards by Merritt's son. The agreement says Merritt knew about the 2006 theft but allowed the county to continue to pay the bills.

His son, Bryan Merritt, pleaded guilty to five counts of fraudulent use of an access device and one count of attempted use.

Ken Merritt, a Republican, is running against Democratic incumbent Jeff Sandy in the November race for sheriff.
