Richmond to welcome Japanese baseball team

Posted:

RICHMOND, Va. (WVVA) -- A junior baseball team that had to pass on a sister city exchange last year because of the earthquake and tsunami in its homeland is due to arrive in Richmond.

The Sister Cities Commission will welcome the team Friday from Saitama, Japan, for the 18th Richmond-Saitama International Baseball Exchange. The exchange was canceled last year because of the devastation in Japan.

During their weeklong stay in Richmond, the little leaguers will take the field with their baseball counterparts in the Richmond area and see the sights. The visiting team, coaches and support staff total more than 20.

The city's first baseball exchange began in 1994.
