W.Va. inmate sentenced in cell phone probe

Posted:

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WVVA) -- A federal inmate who had a cell phone at the U.S. Penitentiary at Hazelton in Preston County has been sentenced to an additional year in prison.

U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld said Thursday that 35-year-old Licurtis Whitney was sentenced in federal court in Clarksburg for his guilty plea to one count of obstruction of justice.

Ihlenfeld says when staff at a satellite minimum-security camp at Hazelton confronted Whitney about his possession of the cell phone last September, he fled on foot and threw the phone into a wooded area.

Whitney's sentence will be served consecutively with his current sentence of six years and three months.
