Marion Co. Commission wants locks to remain open

Posted:

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WVVA) -- The Marion County Commission says two locks on the Upper Monongahela River should remain open for recreational use.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to close the Hildebrand and Opekiska locks for recreational use in October to cut costs.

Media outlets report that the County Commission signed a resolution Wednesday in support of keeping the locks open. The resolution offers several solutions, including keeping the locks open 45 days instead of 90.

Upper Mon River Association vice president Barry Pallay says economic and river development would be hindered if the locks are closed.
