Rockefeller to chair online tax hearing

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVVA) -- Sen. Jay Rockefeller will chair a Washington hearing examining a rule that spares many online retailers from state sales tax laws.

The West Virginia Democrat will convene the hearing Wednesday of the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

Rockefeller is co-sponsoring legislation that would eliminate the price disadvantage on local retailers. He says brick and mortar retailers in West Virginia are at the mercy of a 6 percent to 10 percent price disadvantage when competing with online competitors.

The Rockefeller legislation would also provide states with the ability to enforce tax laws without unduly burdening e-commerce.
