Bluefield Area Transit sets ridership record

Posted:

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (AP) -- The Bluefield Area Transit has broken a ridership record.

Director Patrick McKiinney says a total 210,811 riders used the transit system in fiscal 2011-2012. The previous record was 196,201 riders in fiscal 2008-2009.

McKinney tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that 65 percent of the system's riders are elderly. But younger people are opting to ride the bus instead of drive a car because of the cost of gasoline.

The U.S. 52 route in McDowell County has seen the largest growth.
