TAZEWELL (WVVA) - A Tazewell County man is behind bars after allegedly robbing a convenience store.

Bobby Shannon Altizer, 29, of Swords Creek, Va., turned himself after being convinced to do so during a phone conversation with police.

Altizer is accused of robbing the Fas Mart in Claypool Hill armed with a knife or box cutter. Clerks at the store called police at 11:58 p.m.

There was a total of $345.17 taken from the store.

While en route to the scene, Tazewell County sheriff's deputies were notified of a man matching the suspect's description had also entered the Little General in Richlands with a box cutter, but no money was taken.

Deputies from Tazewell and Russell counties searched for the suspect until he agreed to surrender to police at a location in Claypool Hill.

Altizer is currently charged with one count of armed robbery. He faces additional charges of attempted armed robbery in Richlands and Russell County.

He is being held without bond at Southwest Virginia Regional Jail.

Following is the full press release from the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office:

On 7/26/12 at approximately  11:58 pm dispatchers with the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office received a call for the store clerks at the Fas Mart on Gov. G. C. Peery Hwy in Claypool Hill advising they had just been robbed and that the suspect was armed with a knife or box cutter. Deputies were immediately dispatched to the scene and investigators were sent to the scene as well to process the evidence. While in route to the scene deputies were notified that a suspect matching the description had came into the Little General store in Richlands and went behind the counter while holding a box cutter as well but no money or demands for money had been made. It was immediately apparent that the same suspect was involved in both incidents. The suspect is Bobby Shannon Altizer a 29 year old white male from Natures Way Rd in Swords Creek, Va.

Deputies from Tazewell and Russell Counties searched for the suspect through the night and were successful in getting Altizer to turn himself in. Chief Deputy Harold Heatley spoke with the suspect on the phone for a period of time and convinced him to meet him at the Shell Store in Claypool Hill not far from the scene of the crime. Sheriff Brian Hieatt stated, "Tonight was a perfect example of agencies working together to bring these criminals to justice." Altizer is currently charged with one count of Armed Robbery based on his being positively identified by both store clerks. Altizer is facing additional charges of Attempted Armed Robbery in Richlands and in Russell County. It is possible Altizer may have attempted to rob the Valero gas station in Rosedale, Va. prior to him turning himself in to Tazewell County Deputies.
