Outbreaks prompt quarantine at Mercer Co. shelter

Posted:

PRINCETON, W.Va. (AP) - Outbreaks of distemper and parvo have prompted a canine quarantine at the Mercer County animal shelter.

Director Lisa Williams says there have been five distemper cases and at least three or four parvo cases recently.

Williams tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph (http://bit.ly/LMWOmx ) that dogs and puppies are not being accepted at the shelter during the two-week quarantine. Canines also aren't being offered for adoption.

The illnesses don't affect felines. Williams says cats and kittens are available for adoption and are being accepted at the shelter.
