PRINCETON - Mercer County Schools Superintendent Deborah S. Akers has been named to the Executive Committee of the American Association of School Administrators. Akers will represent Region 6, filling a two-year unexpired term.
The American Association of School Administrators advocates for the highest quality public education for all students, and develops and supports school system leaders. The organization, founded in 1865, is the professional organization for more than 13,000 educational leaders in the United States and throughout the world.
Through its "Educating the Total Child" campaign and other programs, AASA advocates for creating the conditions necessary for all students to become successful, lifelong learners. As school system leaders, AASA members set the pace for academic achievement and help shape policy, oversee its implementation and represent school districts to the public at large.
AASA policy is set by its 135-member Governing Board, drawn from seven distinct U.S. geographic regions. Akers had previously served on this Governing Board, working on such issues as public school funding, governance, and leadership development.
The 21-member Executive Committee to which Akers was recently named is elected by the Governing Board to represent each geographic region. AASA members advance the goals of public education and champion children's causes in their districts and nationwide.
"It is an honor to be elected to this position," Akers said. "As education policy is debated on the national level, it is important we have a place at the table."
Dr. Akers has been Superintendent of Mercer County Schools since the fall of 1992. During her tenure, she has held leadership positions on numerous state and national boards and committees.
