Student options outlined for ailing college

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Both public and private colleges in West Virginia are attempting to take in students from Mountain State University as that school appeals the loss of its general accreditation.

State higher education officials briefed lawmakers Monday on the dire situation at the private Beckley-based university.

The region's Higher Learning Commission plans to revoke Mountain State's accreditation effective Aug. 27, though the school would retain its accreditation during the appeal process.

State officials said Monday that the area's two- and four-year public colleges are working to take over such programs as radiologic technology and medical assistant.

Officials are also helping the school's more than 900 students with state-level financial aid transfer with that aid, which remains valid.

Mountain State announced Monday it will lay off half of its workforce on Sept. 21.
