MSU leader: Accreditation loss could close school

Posted:

BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) -- Mountain State University's interim president says the school's pending loss of accreditation could force it to close.

Media outlets report that Richard Sours discussed the private school's situation with students Thursday at a forum on the Beckley campus.

Mountain State plans to appeal the Higher Learning Commission's decision to withdraw its general accreditation, which is effective Aug. 27.

But the private Beckley-based university isn't enrolling students for the fall semester. Others are expected to transfer to other schools.

Sours told students that the enrollment losses will slash Mountain State's revenue in the fall.

He says layoffs are imminent. The university also plans to liquidate some property and assets.

Mountain State also has campuses in Martinsburg, North Carolina, Florida and Pennsylvania.
