Bluefield to restore long-abandoned black cemetery

Posted:

BLUEFIELD, Va. (AP) -- A long-abandoned black cemetery in Bluefield is being restored.

The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports that the restoration work will begin in the fall. The project will include resetting stones and marking unmarked graves.

The property was once part of Bluefield's town cemetery. The southwest Virginia town abandoned the 3.99-acre section in the 1930s. The current owner donated the property to the town last week.

Bluefield zoning administrator Cody Musick says descendants of people who were buried at the site still live in Bluefield.

Restoration of the site has been discussed since the 1980s.
