CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A pre-holiday storm that caused power outages across the state didn't affect Fourth of July traffic on the West Virginia Turnpike.
Media outlets report that traffic during the 11-day holiday travel period was up 1.5 percent compared to 2011. The number of vehicles traveling the 88-mile toll road was 4.5 percent higher than in 2007, the last time July 4 fell on a Wednesday.
General Manager Greg Barr told the West Virginia Parkways Authority board on Thursday that all three travel plazas operated on generators for varying periods after the June 29 storm.
Barr said State Police troopers were stationed at the plazas to maintain order because service stations in surrounding areas didn't have power. He says only two fights occurred among motorists trying to get gas.
