W.Va. to review summer storm response

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Officials hope to learn from how West Virginia responded to the recent series of violent summer storms.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin on Wednesday announced a review of what went right and what didn't after the storms battered the state.

Tomblin said the initial storm on June 29 left 688,000 homes and businesses without power. That prompted him to declare a state of emergency for all of West Virginia.

The review aims to look at the response by public agencies including emergency management offices, 911 centers and the National Guard.

Also included are utilities, hospitals, nursing homes, volunteer groups and other related entities.

State homeland security chief Jimmy Gianato (Jeh-NET) will oversee the review along with National Guard Major Gen. James Hoyer and Tomblin's top lawyer, Peter Markham.
