FIRST ON WVVA: Man Dies After Stealing Cop Car

GREEN VALLEY (WVVA)--- A man was shot and killed by police after he stole a police cruiser and apprehended a service handgun in a struggle.

According to First Sgt. Michael Baylous It happened at 11:45 last night after a white male escaped custody of the Bluefield W.V. Police Department and stole one of their cruisers.

Bluefield PD, Princeton PD, State Police and Mercer County Sheriff's Department all were in pursuit of the man.

The suspect left the vehicle at the intersection of Route 460 and Country Girl Road in Green Valley.

The man ran into the woods fleeing Bluefield PD and WV State Police. There was a struggle to apprehend the suspect and he was able to gain control of one of the officers handguns.

The suspect refused to release the weapon and that is when a State Trooper fatally shot the suspect.

The name of the suspect is not being released at this time. Stay tuned as WVVA News as exclusive video from the scene.
