APCO sends out-of-state crew home for 'inappropriate behavior'

ROANOKE, VA. (AP) -- An 82-person out-of-state contract crew working to restore power in Virginia has been sent home for what Appalachian Power calls "inappropriate behavior."

Appalachian Power spokeswoman Jeri Matheny would not give details about why the Florida-based OnPower crew was dismissed Thursday. She said a 142-person crew with Entergy out of Arkansas was being brought in to replace them.

OnPower General Manager Tom Esch told the Roanoke Times he was shocked to learn that his crew's services were terminated. He said he was told there was some issue with employees after hours at a hotel.

The Roanoke Valley was one of the areas in Virginia hit hardest by last weekend's storms. More than 95,000 Virginia homes and businesses, including about 11,000 in the Roanoke area, remained without power Thursday afternoon.
