CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A former Huntington convenience store owner faces up to five years in prison for food stamp fraud.
Media outlets report that 34-year-old Ibrahim Osman Owayda pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court in Charleston to defrauding the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin says Owayda admitted giving 50 to 65 cents on the dollar to holders of benefit debit cards. He kept the rest of the money.
Goodwin says the scheme netted Owayda $297,871.
Owayda also faces a $10,000 fine and must make restitution. Sentencing is set for October.
He formerly owned the Huntington Mart.
