Frontier reports generator thefts

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (July 1, 2012) – Thieves have stolen generators from several Frontier Communications facilities in the aftermath of a powerful storm Friday that caused widespread property damage and the loss of electric power.

The theft of the generators has affected Frontier's ability to operate its facilities during the ongoing emergency, said Dana Waldo, Frontier's senior vice president and general manager for West Virginia. Frontier uses gasoline- and diesel-powered generators and batteries to power its networks when commercial power is unavailable.

Waldo said Frontier has notified law enforcement about the thefts and is asking persons with information about them to notify its security department, which will accept anonymous tips. The number is:

"This level of lawlessness is remarkable during a statewide emergency," Waldo said. "These thefts create significant problems for us as we strive to provide service to customers who rely on their landline telephones."

Waldo said electric generators are in short supply from traditional sources, thus limiting Frontier's ability to find replacements.

"While we have made some progress in dealing with our ongoing problems with copper thieves, we are appalled that thieves would take these critical generators, thus inhibiting our efforts in certain areas to assist with the state's recovery from the storm," Waldo said.
