Allen, Kaine find common ground at tech forum

Posted:

RESTON, Va. (AP) -- The two former Virginia governors vying for a U.S. Senate seat found some common ground while appearing before a panel of northern Virginia business leaders.

Both Republican George Allen and Democrat Tim Kaine say they oppose the massive government spending cuts that are set to kick in on Jan. 1, and they both say they favor simplifying the tax code.

They also agreed that the University of Virginia's governing board was wrong to fire President Teresa Sullivan without a meeting.

The Northern Virginia Technology Council forum Thursday morning was somewhat overshadowed by the news afterward that the Supreme Court had upheld the individual mandate at the heart of President Obama's health care reform law. Allen says he's disappointed that the justices used "judicial creativity to call the mandate a tax."
