Virginia AG: A 'dark day' for American liberty

Posted:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli says the U.S. Supreme Court's decision upholding President Barack Obama's health care overhaul makes this "a dark day for American liberty."

The Republican made the remark Thursday after the court affirmed the law in a 5-4 decision.

Cuccinelli believes the law's requirement that individuals buy health insurance or pay a penalty is unconstitutional. That's a view shared by the 26 states involved in the Supreme Court case, but the justices ruled against them. Cuccinelli says in a written statement that the decision conflicts with the principle that America has a government of limited powers.

Cuccinelli filed a separate lawsuit against the law, but a judge's ruling in his favor was overturned when a federal appeals court ruled that Virginia lacked legal standing to sue.
