Former Bluefield high football players Rusty Coeburn and Daniel Wells feel like it is their turn to give back. They were members of BHS's state championship football team in 2004. Now, with some help from a few other former players, they are starting a camp called "Pondering Sports", which is aimed at helping athletes prepare for college, both physically, and academically. Wells says things he learned at college surprised him, and wants to teach current high school students what lies ahead in college.
"When I first got to school my first thought was ‘Oh my God', look at all these things we have to do, look at all the requirements, and how much time we have to spend, so what we're trying to do is make it so that when they get there, they know they need this GPA, they know they need this SAT level to get there and have the right mindset to succeed."
Wells says the experiences he gained from playing at Marshall will help these athletes out.
"The experience we have I feel are gonna be necessary and there's a need for these kids who really don't have a program like that here."
While sports are always on an athlete's mind, Coeburn advises on keeping pace with academics as well.
"Don't wait to the last second to take your ACT or SAT, or even prepare for it. Its one of those things that the earlier you can jump on it, as far as you know a freshman or sophomore to try and prepare for it, the better off you'll be in the long run."
The camps are for any high school students and run on July 6th and 7th.
