State plan protects Greenbrier Co. turkey operations

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The state Department of Agriculture plans to limit the use of Eastern Panhandle chicken litter as fertilizer on fields near a turkey breeder's operations in the Greenbrier Valley.

The Charleston Daily Mail (http://bit.ly/OrHADY ) says agriculture officials are concerned that the chicken litter could be infected with diseases that could spread to Aviagen Turkeys' operations.

They told lawmakers Tuesday at an interim committee meeting that the department plans to issue an emergency rule to protect Aviagen's operations. It would require people who sell chicken litter to farms within 3 miles of "primary" poultry breeding operations to compost the litter for 60 days to kill the pathogens. The litter also would have to be tested and come from chicken flocks that have been tested.

Aviagen is the state's only "primary" poultry breeding operation.
