Claytor Lake Beach Closed After Swimmer Drowns

DUBLIN, Va. - Authorities have closed the beach at Claytor Lake State Park following a drowning.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation says a 20-year-old man drowned Monday while swimming.

The incident happened at approximately 4:10 p.m.

A lifeguard noticed the man and another swimmer appeared to be in distress. The lifeguard rescued the other swimmer but the victim disappeared underwater.

The victim was transported to Carillion New River Valley Medical Center at 4:51 p.m.

Lifeguards and park staff found the victim about 10 minutes later. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

The name of the victim has not been released, he has only been identified as a Hispanic male. As of Tuesday morning, the family of the victim has not been notified.

The beach is closed Tuesday.
