LOGAN, W.Va. (AP) -- A southern West Virginia lawmaker is facing domestic battery and assault charges.

Media outlets report that State Police arrested 43-year-old Delegate Rupert Phillips of Logan on the misdemeanor charges on Saturday.

According to a criminal complaint, a woman told Trooper S.A. Bell that Phillips pushed her during an altercation over relationship issues. She fell to the floor and went to a local hospital to receive stitches.

Phillips declined comment on Tuesday. He remains free on a personal recognizance bond.

The Logan County Democrat is seeking re-election to the House of Delegates' 24th District. He was the district's top vote getter in the primary and faces no Republican opponent in the November general election.
