Heat on the Way…
We are nearing the end of June, but you wouldn't know it with these cool temperatures! Low temperatures Tuesday morning fell down to 51 in Bluefield, 47 in Beckley and 46 in Lewisburg-which is not record-breaking by any means, but it sure felt like it!
A dip in the jet stream has brought a brief shot of cooler and drier air to the 2 Virginias Tuesday through part of Wednesday. It will start warming back up Wednesday afternoon-and after that, the oppressive heat of summer will return.
A massive heat wave has overtaken the western interior and Midwest part of the country. Monday afternoon, temperatures soared into the 90s and triple digits for dozens of cities. Denver, CO hit a high of 105 degrees, which tied their all-time record for any month. Other hot spots Monday included Billings, Montana (101), Dallas, Texas (104), and Sidney, Nebraska (109).
This extreme heat will continue to move east through the week and by Thursday, highs across the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys will be in the 90s to triple digits. Here in the 2 Virginias, Friday and possibly Saturday look to be the hottest days with highs climbing into the 90s. The Dewpoint will also begin to rise by the end of the week-bringing back high humidity and heat index values approaching 100 across the low lands.
Long range forecast models show a possibility for isolated showers and storms over the weekend and early next week, which look to provide little heat relief-if any. Temperatures will stay hot into at least the middle of next week.
This upcoming heat wave will be tough on many in the east and here in 4 seasons country. Be sure to watch the elderly as well as younger children for signs of heat illness and know how to keep yourself cool on these hot summer days.
