CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The lack of space in West Virginia's prisons is leaving dozens of convicted killers and more than 100 sex offenders in the state's regional jails.
Figures presented to legislators on Monday show that 481 inmates in jails last month should be in prison for violent crimes.
These violent offenders made up close to 27% of the nearly 1,800 inmates who remained in jails last month because the prisons are at capacity.
The violent felons in jail included 65 convicted of homicide, and 124 of a sex offense involving force.
Acting regional jails chief Joe DeLong said this backlog is making the jails more dangerous.
Lawmakers said West Virginia needs a policy that makes it a priority to move violent felons off the waiting list and into prison.
