On the top of Big Walker Mountain, right on the Bland and Wythe county line, lies a quaint country store which provides a scenic look over southwestern Virginia. But now, this store has become an official part of the Crooked Road Heritage Music Trail, which celebrates the roots of bluegrass music. Owner of the Big Walker Country Store Ron Kime says,
"southwest Virginia was the birthplace of country music. It started in Hiltons, VA, and the first recording was done in Bristol, and the Crooked Road takes folks through southwest Virginia into all the areas that are basically the birth of bluegrass."
His store was one of the lucky applicants to be selected to be apart of this trail, saying that out of 150 applicants, only 12 were picked.
Bands play a free concert every Sunday, starting around one o'clock. Musicians from all across the Two Virginias and beyond come to play, although the featured musician, Lee Beamer from Wytheville, is only 16 years old. According to Kime, she is "an accomplished musician and has a beautiful voice."
Aside from music, arts and crafts are held here on Saturdays. For any information regarding the Big Walker Country Store, go to www.scenicbeauty-va.com.
