CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A long time educator and leader has been named by the West Virginia Board of Education (WVBE) as the new Fayette County superintendent of schools. Keith Butcher will take the reins of the county school system on July 1, 2012. In selecting Butcher, the Board noted his extensive experience in curriculum, instruction, school improvement and school finance.

"I believe that continued economic development in Fayette County is dependent upon having an outstanding school system," said Butcher. "I am excited about this opportunity and look forward to working with the educators, parents and students in Fayette County."

Butcher is currently employed as executive director of the Regional Education Service Agency (RESA 1) in Beckley, West Virginia. Prior to his employment at RESA 1, he held several positions at the West Virginia Department of Education including West Virginia Title I director and executive director for the Office of Instructional Services. Butcher began his career as an elementary teacher in Nicholas County before being employed as a principal in both Nicholas and Braxton counties.

Keith Butcher holds a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Concord College and a Master's degree in education administration from West Virginia University.  Butcher is currently a doctoral student at Marshall University in educational leadership.

The current Fayette County superintendent, Dwight Dials, will be retiring at the end of June 2012. The WVBE intervened in Fayette County in 2010 citing student achievement and facility issues.
