Mercer Tech School Will Receive Award

Posted:

PRINCETON (WVVA)-- One in three can be taken many different ways. In baseball going one for three is pretty good. When taking a test only getting one in three correct is not that good. But being one in three technical schools in the nation getting an award is awesome.

That is what the Mercer County Technical School can be proud of after finding out that they will be one of the three technical schools nationwide to receive the "Gold Readiness Award".

"We are very proud of it, we have done a lot of work at the technical ed center the last few years and encouraging students to be there to take part in the programs, said Superintendent of the Mercer County School District Deborah Akers.

It is good news not just for the students and teachers of the school, but the county and southern West Virginia that might not always get the attention some of the bigger, northern counties get with education.

"We like to show off and we like to show how proud we are of our school district, and I think as people talk throughout the state Mercer County does have that reputation but awards like this help to cement that," Akers said.

And it gives the hardworking students and teachers the recognition they Akers feels they deserve.

"These kinds of awards do not come unless your administration and your teachers are doing what they need to do, and are going above and beyond. It has taken a lot of effort on their part. When they see those kinds of accolades come to the school in which they work, they should be very proud, I am proud of them."
