Jobless rates rise in 44 W.Va. counties in May

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Unemployment rates increased in 44 of West Virginia's 55 counties in May.

Workforce West Virginia says only six counties reported unemployment rate declines. They are Pocahontas, Clay, Hancock, Randolph, Berkeley and Mineral.

Unemployment rates in Roane, Calhoun, Summers, Greenbrier and Hampshire counties didn't change.

Monongalia County's 5 percent rate was the lowest in the state. Pocahontas County's 14.4 percent rate was the highest.

West Virginia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.9 percent, up two-tenths of a percentage point from April's rate.
