RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Former Sen. George Allen won Tuesday's primary election over three lesser-known Republicans, setting up a showdown with Democrat Tim Kaine in an attempt to win back the Senate seat he lost six years ago.

Allen's challengers in Tuesday's primary were tea party leader Jamie Radtke, state legislator Bob Marshall and minister E.W. Jackson.

A Washington Post poll from last month showed that more than six out of 10 likely GOP primary voters favored the former governor who lost his 2006 Senate re-election to Democrat Jim Webb.

Allen now faces Democratic former Gov. Kaine in a race that could determine Senate partisan control.

Six U.S. House nominations were also up for grabs Tuesday. Challenged incumbents include Democrat Jim Moran and Republican Reps. Randy Forbes, Bob Goodlatte and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.
