BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – Bluefield State junior Shikar Kapur has been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District II At-Large Team, voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A native of New Dehli, India, Kapur earns Academic All-District honors for the first time in his career and is the first student-athlete from the tennis program to earn the distinction.
The men's at-large ballot consists of student-athletes competing in fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
This year, NCAA Division II has its own Capital One Academic All-America® teams. District II includes schools from the WVIAC, Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Assosciation. Kapur and his 11 District II teammates will advance to the national ballot.
Kapur is the reigning WVIAC Player of the Year, the second time in his career that he has earned the honor. He is one of only five players in the history of the conference to be named player of the year multiple times.
Playing as the Big Blues no. 1 singles player, Kapur helped lead BSC to their first ever WVIAC regular season, tournament and Atlantic Regional titles on their way to their first ever berth in the Round of 16 in the NCAA II National Tournament. He concluded his junior season with a combined record of 29-13 in singles and doubles play, as the 50th ranked singles player in the country and No. 2 in the Atlantic Region. His doubles team also was ranked No. 9 in the regin.
An architectural engineering technology major, Kapur has a 3.7 GPA and was named to the Dean's or President's List every semester of his collegiate career.
The last BSC student-athlete to earn Academic-All-America honors was women's basketball player Cassie Miller when she was named to the 2002 Second Team.
