BECKLEY (WVVA) - In the hottest election topic in Raleigh County: More than 60 percent of voters have expressed approval of the fire levy.

At least 60 percent of the vote was necessary to pass the measure. It received 63 percent.

A total of 7,447 voted 'Yes' for the measure that would help provide funding to struggling fire departments in the county. 4,306 voted 'No.'

Locally, voters were faced with a light ballot otherwise in Raleigh. In the assessor race, Drema Bias-Evans won on the Democrat ticket, scoring 4,385 votes over Jery Zaferatos' 3,221. No Republican ran.

Several contests were uncontested, automatically sending challengers ahead to the November ballot. Sheriff Steve Tanner will face Republican challenger Stan Ellison. Democrat John Wooton will face the GOP's Linda K. Epling.

In the Board of Education contest, Richard Snuffer captured the nomination with 6,102 votes. Sally Susman followed with 4,287; George Wood Jr. received 4,249 and Stephen Finch received 3,087.
