ORIGINAL REPORT: BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - Thousands were without power and some roads were impassable as the region was hit with its first major snow of 2012.
As many as 18,500 Appalachian Power customers were without service in Mercer County alone Sunday evening. Outages were reported in all counties in WVVA's viewing area.
The number of outages increased steadily throughout Sunday. There was no word late Sunday when power could be restored.

Motorists were advised to travel only if necessary, and to do so cautiously as many roadways across the region were snow-covered. Trees were reported down along many roadways.

Snow was expected to taper off late Sunday evening. Roads were expected to freeze overnight, making for a treacherous commute on Monday morning.

The Winter Storm Warning was issued Saturday afternoon for all counties in the WVVA viewing area. Totals of 4-8 inches were expected in most areas by the time the storm passed through.
As early as Friday, residents began stocking up at local grocery stores as the threat of snow grew.
