'Cat Bus' takes kitties for spaying

GREEN VALLEY (WVVA) - Dozens of cats returned to the Mercer County Animal Shelter Tuesday morning, fresh from their spaying.

Mountain View Humane picked up the cats Monday for a trip to Christiansburg where they were spayed. It's part of an effort to spay as many felines in the region as possible, before spring arrives and cats go into heat.

The group's executive director Kelly Cass says in the past year, thousands of homeless kittens were euthanized across the Two Virginias, and new unwanted litters are likely to suffer the same fate.

All month long, the group is providing a pickup service for cat owners. Cats will be spayed at the group's clinic in Christiansburg and returned the next day.

The group asks for a $20 donation for the service, but also offers financial assistance.

"At a vet it can cost hundreds," Cass said.
