Hickam: No October Sky Festival in 2012

COALWOOD (WVVA) - The annual festival celebrating the story of McDowell County's 'Rocket Boys' will not be held this year, according to one of Coalwood's most famous sons.

Homer Hickam, author of 'Rocket Boys,' posted the announcement on his official Facebook page Wednesday, where he stated that although the festival has been successful, the people of Coalwood who organized the event felt they could no longer produce the festival to high standards.

The first October Sky Festival was held in 1999, the same year the motion picture 'October Sky' debuted. The film was based on Hickam's book, which chronicles Hickam's life growing up in McDowell County and the his fascination with space.

Below is the full statement from Hickam's official Facebook page:

I'm very sorry about this but the October Sky Festival held for the past 13 years in Coalwood, West Virginia, will not be held in 2012. Although the festival has been tremendously successful and attracted thousands from around the country and the world, the people of Coalwood who did most of the work are getting a little older and felt they could no longer produce the festival to the high standards they'd set for themselves. The other Rocket Boys and I have always said we'd come as long as the people of Coalwood wanted to hold the festival but we fully understand why it has come to an end. Our sincere thanks to the people of Coalwood for all the great festivals. We love them and our little town. As Roy Lee said, "The chapter ends, but the Coalwood book goes on forever."
