Town of Tazewell appoints interim police chief

TAZEWELL (WVVA) - An officer with more than three decades of experience has been appointed to take on the role of interim sheriff in the town of Tazewell.

Longtime officer Walter Barrett will take over the position vacated by Chief Greg Layne. Layne is taking a position with the Tazewell County Sheriff's Department, effective Feb. 1.

Barrett says he was happy to accept Town Manager Jerry Wood's offer to fill the interim role. He says he plans to apply for the permanent position.
